Who was St Dwynwen?

St Dwynwen lived in the fifth century and was the daughter of Brychan Brycheiniog, King of Brecknockshire.

Dwynwen fell in love with a Prince called Maelon Dafodrill. However, her father had already arranged her marriage to another man. Dwynwen begged God to let her forget Maelon.

One night, an angel came to her, froze Maelon into a block of ice and gave Dwynwen a potion to forget the Prince.

God then granted Dwynwen three wishes. Her first was that Maelon be thawed, her second wish was that God would meet the hopes and dreams of true lovers and her third was that she would never marry.

Her wishes were granted and henceforth she dedicated her life to God.

St Dwynwen founded a convent in Llanddwyn on Anglesey.
